The Emergent Structure of Phenomena: Self-Organisation, Wave Radiation, and the Arising of the World
A Structural Analysis of Katakamuna Verse 10
Abstract
Katakamuna Verse 10 describes the emergent structure of phenomena: not the beginning of the universe as a single event, but the structural conditions under which phenomena continuously emerge as distinct, independent presences within the field of spacetime. The Verse opens with ME KU RU — the continuous, recurring appearance of the field — and closes with HA SHI MA RI — the beginning, understood not as a moment but as an ongoing structural process. Between these two, the Verse describes the dual generative action of MU SU HI from both the VPR manifestation of KA (TA KA MI) and the ISR manifestation of KA (KA MU MI); the self-organising radial expansion of wave motion into the field (O NO KO RO SHI MA); and the structural triad A ME · TSU CHI · NE — which describes material existence at every scale, from the Jomon world of rain, earth, and root to the cosmic scale.

★ Composite Glyphs (CG) — All Sonic Elements
From Verse 09 onward, Katakamuna introduces Composite Glyphs (CG) — characters formed by the fusion of two or three Sonic Elements. In Verse 10, all Sonic Elements appear as CG, reflecting the increasing structural complexity of what the Verse describes. NE alone is represented as a single Sonic Element.
1. Phase 1 — ME KU RU MA NO MI NA KA NU SHI
ME KU RU — The Recurring Appearance of the Field
ME is the field in its gathered, localised state — the transition of MA into a specific, present form. KU is free, unimpeded spreading. RU is continuous flow and persistence. ME KU RU: the field continuously and recurringly appears — not once, but as an ongoing process of showing up within the expanse of spacetime.
MI NA KA NU SHI — The Invisible at the Centre
MI NA KA names the centre in which entities have settled into realised form — the point of stable, defined existence. NU SHI names what acts within that centre: the invisible (NU) that shows itself (SHI) through its effects rather than through direct observation.MI NA KA NU SHI: at the centre of realised existence, something invisible is showing itself. The ground of stable existence is not itself visible. It acts from within, sustaining what appears.
2. Phase 2 — TA KA MI MU SU HI · KA MU MI MU SU HI
TA KA MI and KA MU MI — Two Manifestations of KA
TA KA MI is the VPR manifestation of KA: the root force having differentiated into independently established, visible form. What KA becomes when it takes on a distinct, bounded presence in the observable realm.KA MU MI is the ISR manifestation of KA: the root force taking form through the full extent of spacetime from its invisible, source side. Paired with TA KA MI, it names the other side of the same root force.
MU SU HI — The Generative Process
MU SU HI: producing (SU — musu, to generate) through the full extent of spacetime (MU — Numeral 6, the six-directional realm) and arriving as the root unit (HI — Numeral 1).MU SU HI appears twice in the Verse — once with TA KA MI as subject, once with KA MU MI. The same generative process arises from both the VPR side and the ISR side simultaneously. Neither side alone initiates it. Both produce MU SU HI together.
Preserved in the modern Japanese musubi (産霊・結び): to bind, to generate, to bring forth.
3. Phase 3 — O NO KO RO SHI MA
Self-Organisation and Radial Wave Expansion
O NO KO RO: the great circulation of the universal expanse spreading into space — spontaneous gathering and condensing from within itself. Self-organisation at the scale of the whole.SHI MA: shima (縞) — the radial striped pattern produced when wave motion (HI BI KI, established in KV-01) extends outward into the field. Not stripes in a single direction, but radiating outward from a centre in all directions simultaneously — concentric and radial, like the pattern formed when a stone is dropped into still water.
O NO KO RO SHI MA: from the great self-organising circulation of the universal expanse, wave motion radiates outward as a field of radial stripes.
4. Phase 4 — KA MU NA HO KU
KA Settled in Spacetime, Spreading with Order
KA MU NA: KA having settled and become defined within the full extent of spacetime — the root force anchored within the six-directional realm.HO KU: activity directed toward the VPR, spreading freely with the orderly, sequential quality of hogusu (解す) — to loosen, to disentangle, to unfold with order rather than disorder. Not chaotic dispersal but structured, sequential opening.
KA MU NA HO KU: KA, anchored within spacetime, unfolds into the VPR with orderly structure.
5. Phase 5 — A ME · TSU CHI · NE
The Verse names three terms that together describe the complete structure of material existence.
A Universal Structural Triad
A ME (established in KV-09): the assembly of elementary particles — protons, neutrons, electrons — gathered like raindrops. What nourishes and descends.TSU CHI: what accumulates (TSU) and persists as material phenomenon (CHI) — the layered, built-up receiver. Preserved in the modern Japanese tsuchi (土): earth, soil, ground.
NE: the root environment and condition. Geometrically, the small circles are placed at even-numeral positions (2, 4, 6, 8) — where odd numerals represent particle-like phenomena, even numerals represent environment and context. NE is the foundational environment within which A ME and TSU CHI can exist and interact. Preserved in ne (根): root.
| Scale | A ME | TSU CHI | NE |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jomon world | Rain | Earth | Root networks |
| Ecology | Solar energy · precipitation | Soil · organisms | Mycorrhizal networks |
| Atomic | Electrons | Nucleus | Nuclear force |
| Cosmic | Interstellar gas · dust | Stars · planets | Physical laws · constants |
The same structural triad describes material existence from the scale of rain falling on soil to the scale of galaxies forming within the conditions of physical law. The structure is identical — only the referents change.
6. Phase 6 — HA SHI MA RI
The Beginning as Continuous Process
HA SHI MA RI: spreading into the field (HA), continuously showing itself (SHI), within spacetime (MA), as independent, differentiated presences (RI).The beginning — preserved in the modern Japanese hajimari (始まり) — is not the first event in a sequence. It is the structural condition of arising: the continuous emergence of differentiated, independent presence within the field of spacetime.
The recurring appearance (ME KU RU) that opened the Verse and the continuous beginning (HA SHI MA RI) that closes it are the same process seen from two directions. The beginning described in Verse 10 is not something that happened once. It is something that is happening now.
